The National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) in Kenya is a government agency tasked with providing affordable and accessible medical insurance coverage to all Kenyans.
Employers are required to submit their employees’ monthly payroll details to NHIF, including their names and national/passport IDs, along with the respective rates each employee should be deducted.
To make the payment process more efficient, NHIF has introduced an online submission system for employers.
One of the convenient ways for employers to pay NHIF contributions is through M-Pesa, a popular mobile money transfer system in Kenya. To pay NHIF via M-Pesa, employers can follow these steps:
- Ensure they have sufficient funds in their M-Pesa account. They can top up their account at any M-Pesa agent or using the M-Pesa app.
- Dial *840# on their phone to access the M-Pesa menu and select the “Pay Bill” option.
- Enter the NHIF Pay Bill Number (200222).
- Enter the employer’s NHIF account number, which is their National ID number followed by the letter “Y” at the end (e.g., “3456789y”).
- Enter the amount they wish to pay, which should be the cumulative amount of all the months that the employer has defaulted on their contributions.
- Enter their M-Pesa PIN to validate the transaction and confirm that all entries are accurate.
By using M-Pesa to pay NHIF contributions, employers can ensure that their payments are fast, secure, and cost-effective. In case of any issues or problems with NHIF, employers can contact NHIF through their offices or by calling their contact numbers.
